& Events

Counting steps as part of your exercise routine?
Preserve-like terrain averages about 2080 steps per mile.
The length of each trail is listed on the printed maps for each preserve available at the trailheads and downloadable from the interactive trail map and on each preserve webpage.

Color Blind Trailblazing
The blue & red trails at our Miller Farm Preserve are now blazed with a white "B" for blue and "R" for red to help colorblind hikers follow the trails more easily.
Please share your impression of this change by emailing trail.monitor@ehlt.org.

Hunting Season
Hunting is not permitted on EHLT preserves but, please, for your safety, always wear orange when in the woods during hunting season.

Check 'Our Preserves' for info on each preserve with trails or use our Interactive Trail Map.

Use the contact link at the bottom of this page to report trail issues.

Stewardship Work
Saturday, September 21, 9:30 am to noonish

Join our stewardship team for continuing woodland management work at Ayers Preserve. Work will focus on removing weeds from the cages that are protecting oak seedlings. Gloves and clippers are recommended. We will carpool from the Chapal Farm parking lot on Route 82 at 9:30 am, but coffee and donuts will be available at 9:15 am.

Swallow Murmuration Paddle
Sunday, September 22, 5:00 pm until after dark

A murmuration is a great gathering of swallows that forms a vortex in the sky and Goose Island is a great place to witness the beauty. Meet at the launch site at D.E.E.P. Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme for a 5:00 pm launch; we will paddle until dark. Personal floatation devices (life jackets) are required; flashlights or headlamps, insect spray, and drinking water are advised. Kayaks, canoes, and other human-propelled vessels are welcome to join. Vessels are BYO. Watch a 2015 video of a swallow murmuration in the lower Connecticut River.

Woods Walk
Sunday, September 29, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

This hike at Sheepskin Hollow Preserve will be led by acclaimed horticulturist Steve Dedman, who delights hikers with fun facts and curiosities of our woods. Among the attractions are a waterfall and an active beaver pond. Note that the portions of the trails go over rocky areas and ledge. Please park and meet at the Ridgebury Road entrance to the preserve.

We also have preserves and easements without trails where access is not practical or landowners maintain the use of the property.

Please note, hunting is not permitted on EHLT preserves, but please wear orange during hunting season as a safety precaution.

We currently protect nearly 800 acres of land in preserves and through property easements.  Many of our preserves have marked hiking trails open to the public.
