The 11-acre Ballahack Preserve's trail is best accessed at the dead-end of the Ballahack Road Extension (Ballahack Rd. #3). There is evidence of an old woods road that serves as a portion of the trail as it meanders through the preserve, eventually accessing Lakeshore Drive. The preserve has varied terrain of wetlands and upland hardwood habitats. The trail has some steep inclines as well as gentle grades and level ground. A healthy understory of mountain laurel flowers in mid-June. In winter, there are lovely views of Bashan Lake.
This preserve is part of the Lyme Forest Block Important Bird Area. See "Six EHLT Preserves in Newly-Designated Important Bird Area" for more information.
